With the Door County Fair in session this past week, that meant a trip to Thunderhill Raceway on Wednesday night to try to increase our very slim point lead over Jarred VanLaanen.
We were greeted by a very wet and heavy track for our heat race, and I hung on to finish 4th. That finish would set us up 9th on the starting grid for the night’s feature.
Early in the feature, I tried to run the low line, but took to the high side to start to make a few passes up to 7th. Going for 5th, a caution flag flew which set us up back on the bottom for the restart.
Everyone did a great job of avoiding disaster on the restart, as Vince Engebregtsen went through the infield and back into the lead for a short time. I went back up to the outside and made the pass around Jacob Zellner for 4th, and then passed Engebregtsen on the bottom to shoot to 3rd with a few laps remaining. We would settle for a solid finish in 3rd, putting our lead back up to 3 points with 4 nights remaining.
On Friday at Luxemburg, I started 4th in the heat race and the whole field had to scatter to avoid a spinning Cody Rass. We kept the race under green, and after falling back to 5th, I went down low to make a pass back to 4th. In the closing laps, I held off Cody Schroeder to cross the finish line in 4th.
Our heat race finish set us up 5th in the feature lineup, where I quickly followed Wayne Haines and Bill Edler up to the 3rd spot. I moved to the outside to try to advance forward, but went back down to the bottom after not making any headway. Todd Wiese came around all 3 of us to take the lead, and I went back up high to follow him into the 2nd spot. A lone caution flag flew for a multi-car wreck, and on the restart I followed Wiese on the bottom in the closing laps.
With about 4 laps to go, Jacob Zellner got around the outside of me and challenged Wiese for the lead on the final lap. He came up just short of the win, with Wiese taking the checkers and myself settling for 3rd.
