Career Best 7th Place Finish at Luxemburg

Chris Budzban IMCA 5/20/11

I think the phrase “pleasantly surprised” sums up our night at Luxemburg Speedway this past Friday night. I got the outside front row draw in my heat race, and was able to quickly grab the lead on the opening lap. I was able to lead 3 or 4 laps in the early going, but just didn’t trust the car enough to maintain the lead. Scott Boulanger & Brad Theys got around me, and I was comfortable with a 3rd place finish.

Qualifying for the feature through the heat race put me on the outside pole for the feature event. Dylan Heilmann was able to take the point off the start, and I settled into 2nd spot. Andy Kleczka was able to get inside of me to take 2nd away, and I was running in 3rd when the caution flag flew. On the restart, my carburetor was loaded up with fuel, and the bottom line of cars was able to get the jump on me. Josh Long was able to get by me as I hung on on the outside when another caution flag flew.

Again, the carburetor loaded up with fuel, this time worse than the last restart. Brad Lautenbach & Chummy Arneson were able to get by me, then Theys later on in the action. I was able to tuck the car back on the bottom groove, getting by Heilmann to put myself in 7th spot when the final caution flag flew. The final segment of the race didn’t feature much passing, although a close call at the line with Boulanger narrowly gave me the 7th place finishing position.
