After a successful opening to the season last Saturday night at Thunderhill Raceway, it was time to kick off the season at our hometown track of Luxemburg Speedway this past Friday.
We had the very fortunate draw to start on the outside of the front row for the night’s feature. I ran strong on the outside groove for the opening laps of the race, chasing polesitter Troy DeGrave and running side by side with Lucas Lamberies. After a caution, we remained running in the same grooves, with Lamberies getting the edge to take the lead. I battled with DeGrave for the 2nd spot, until the spring shot out of the LR of my car. The caution flag came out as a result, but I would continue racing as well as I could without the spring.
I fell back a couple spots, and decided to go to the bottom of the track in the final laps to salvage what I could for a finishing position. I hung on to finish 8th when the checkers flew.
On Saturday night, we went back up to Sturgeon Bay for the 2nd night of racing at the track.
A 2nd place finish in the heat race set us up 6th on the starting grid for the feature event. At the drop of the green, I worked my way right up to the 4th spot behind Jarred VanLaanen. I would continue to run the outside line to overtake him for the 3rd position, and set my sights on the top 2.
About halfway through the race, I was up to the door of Bernie Reinhardt for the 2nd spot, but wasn’t able to make the pass. Fortunately, a caution flag flew with 6 laps remaining, and I looked to use the restart to my advantage.
On the restart, I got the jump on the outside into turns 1 & 2, and moved down to the low groove to challenge the leader, Vince Engebregtsen. We made a little contact heading into turn 3, and I overtook the lead coming out of turn 4. I opened up the lead in the final 5 laps, taking home my first feature win of the 2015 season.
Next week will be business as usual, as we’ll be at Luxemburg Speedway on Friday night, and Thunderhill Raceway on Saturday night.
