With the regular points season coming to an end, only one event was left on our 2013 schedule. That event was the 10th annual Fall Classic at Luxemburg Speedway this past weekend.

More often than not, the fall specials come down who has the best luck at drawing for their starting position in the feature. I had the best luck with my heat race draw, picking #1 out of the bucket. Unfortunately, my draw for the feature was about as bad as you can get, picking 199 out of a possible 200.

Picking #1 for the heat race meant starting from the pole of the very first race of the evening on Friday night. I took the lead at the drop of the green, and led the race through a pair of caution flags. Coming to the white flag, I pushed through turns 3 and 4, allowing Tracy Wassenberg to get the run he needed to my inside. He would take over the lead on the backstretch and take home the win, leaving me with a 2nd place finish.

Later in the evening, I would compete in the Race of Champions feature as well. My excellent drawing skills rose to the occasion once again, putting me 10th on the 13-car grid. I struggled in the early going, unable to get my car to drive through the corners. After a caution flag flew, I was able to get things going in the right direction, but was only able to muster a 7th place finish at the checkers.

On Saturday, all we had to run was our feature. Starting 12th, I had to avoid an early incident before attempting to make a push through the field. I was able to make the middle lane of the track work, working 3-wide between Brandon Long and Jacob Zellner to move up to 9th. I moved to the bottom groove to pass Ryan LeMieux for 8th, before moving up to the high side to track down Kelsy Hayes for 7th.

A caution flag flew with a few laps remaining, and being stuck on the outside on the restart wasn’t the ideal position to be in. Josh Long was able to drive by me on the inside, and I was left to do battle with Jeremy Cota for the 7th spot in the waning laps. There wasn’t enough grip left to make a pass, leaving me to settle for an 8th place finish.

There are 2 specials remaining in our area this season, but we have decided it is in our best interests to start prepping for the 2014 season instead. Check out our website and social media accounts for updates throughout the offseason.
